(KGO) -- Newark City Councilmember Eve Marie Little is speaking publicly about an attack she says left her with significant injuries less than two weeks before Election Day. "I've had MRIs, CT scans, X-rays," Little said, describing the medical care she has received since the incident. "My fingers have bruising all over from fighting back. My shoulder blade is out. My face is bruised." Little said the attack happened when she went to a local park. "I went to the park to go see if my son was there because he wanted to go and play basketball," she said. While there, Little said she came across a group of men playing basketball. "I introduced myself to them and said, 'Hi, my name is Eve Marie Little. I'm a city councilmember of the city of Newark. And of course, we're making changes to our parks. Do you have any suggestions or things that you'd like to get done?'" The encounter occurred days before the election, when Little's name was on the ballot. "The dark side of campaigning people don't know about," she said. Little said she had been taking notes and was wrapping up what she described as a positive conversation when she was attacked from behind. "I felt this mad energy just hit me in my back. And she took out my knees and my shoulder blade, and I fell on the ground. It was twilight time, and it just turned into a tumble," she recalled. She remembers that no one stepped in to stop the attacker. "I couldn't get her off of me. I kept saying, 'What are you doing? I haven't done anything to you. Why are you hurting me?' And she just kept pounding my face, and I almost felt like I was going to be unconscious at a certain point," she said. Authorities said a bystander provided a description of the vehicle, which helped officers identify it through automated license plate reader cameras. The suspect is a 31-year-old Fremont resident, according to police. She was arrested on Thursday, Oct. 29, and was formally charged by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. "As an elected official, you run to do good things. But it's just scary," she said. Instead of celebrating her reelection, she said she has spent recent days attending medical appointments. "Never did I think talking to people about what changes and positive things you want to do in our park was going to end slightly unconscious," she said. Little described the attack as one of the most traumatic experiences of her life and said she continues to struggle with its emotional impact. "It just knocked the wind out of my sails," she said. "I just don't understand how there can be hate in the world like this." Report a correction or typo Copyright © 2026 KGO-TV. All Rights Reserved.
